  • 3/4 cup long grain rice
  • 1/2 cup Mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • ground pepper, freshly ground to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 pound lean beef tips
  • 1/2 pound fresh Italian sausage, removed from casing
  • 11 /4 cups Italian pasta sauce with herbs, mushrooms, and garlic
  • 1/2 cup Fontina or Provolone cheese, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup Swiss cheese, thinly sliced



Preheat oven to 350ºF. Cook rice according to package directions; cool. Add Mozzarella cheese. Season with pepper. Cut beef tips into thin strips. In large skillet, add oil; placing skillet over medium heat. When oil is hot, add beef tips and sausage (break up sausage with a fork while cooking); cooking until brown ? about 4 to 6 minutes. On bottom of 9×13-inch baking dish, layer half of these items: rice and Mozzarella mixture, tomato sauce, beef tips, and sausage. Repeat rice, sauce, and meat layering; topping off final layer with Fontina and Swiss cheeses. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes in oven until cheeses have melted. Allow dish to stand for 5 minutes. Cut and serve.
